GBCA forms the heritage component of the team examining the condition and long-range plan for the British Columbia Legislature. The site includes 4 buildings - the well-known Legislature which dates from 1895 through 1914; the Armouries which dates to the 1880s; the Premier's garage - designed by Rattenbury, who also designed the Legislature and the nearby Empress Hotel; and the Finance Building which is a modernist building dating from the 1930s. The team, led by the Zeidler Partnership's Victoria Office, has thoroughly investigated all aspects of the buildings on site and is in the process of determining long-term changes to the site to better accommodate the business of government within the heritage envelope. GBCA have been responsible for the condition survey and preliminary planning elements, which are expected to lead into a progressive redevelopment and re-arrangement of the functions within the buildings on site in capital works which may progress over the next decade. Throughout this work, GBCA will be called on to ensure that the proposed works meet the objectives of maintaining the heritage character of the this important Canadian Site. | ||||||||
