In 2007 Goldsmith Borgal & Company Ltd Architects was hired to undertake restoration and renovation work to two heritage duplexes at Elmsley Place on the University of St Michael’s College campus. The primary objective of the project is to modernize and rework the interiors for improvements to layout, environmental control and life safety, while retaining and restoring the significant heritage exteriors. The 1895 Queen Anne style corner building will provide separate accommodation for men and women with restored entrance halls to each, as well as a separate apartment for the Dean which boasts restored wood paneling and decorative plasterwork in the main living area. The adjacent Arts and Crafts style building (constructed nine years after its flamboyant neighbour) is being renovated as a men's residence with enlarged third floor dormers for better headroom at that level. Both buildings will receive all new mechanical and electrical systems including sprinklers, new foundation waterproofing, new perimeter envelope insulation and vapour barrier, new roofing, new windows and largely new interior partitioning and finishes. |
